About University of Southampton Gift of Sight Appeal
The University of Southampton Gift of Sight Appeal funds world-class research into the prevention and treatment of blindness. Research studies include Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), retinal diseases, corneal infections and conditions affecting young children.
Led by Professor Andrew Lotery, our vision science research team has grown over the past 20 years. Many causes of sight failure have been identified in our laboratories, including genetics, diet and ageing. New treatments and therapies are being developed, collaborating with colleagues in various faculties in the University of Southampton and with research institutions in the UK and worldwide.
Thanks to generous donors, we are able to keep scientific projects moving forward. this allows our scientists to gather valuable data to apply for larger grants that are externally peer reviewed.
Your Impact
One in three people will suffer sight loss as a result of macular degeneration by the time they reach 75 years. 10% of all NHS outpatient appointments are in ophthalmology. More than 2.5. million people in the UK have a visual impairment and without treatment, this is expected to increase 40% by 2050.
Despite this, public funding for eye research is very low (1.3%). Charity support helps us to maintain a strong team of laboratory technicians, PhD students and postdoctoral scientists, as well as providing consumables and equipment to undertake vital experiments.
