About Cure Leukaemia

Tags: Cancer Health & Medical

Anyone can develop leukaemia at any age. Although it is more common in adults, leukaemia is the most common form of childhood cancer, with most children diagnosed under the age of 5.

Cure Leukaemia funds the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) which is a network of specialist research nurses at 15 blood cancer centres located in the UK’s biggest cities.

The network has been funded by Cure Leukaemia since 2020 and costs over £1million per year to maintain. This network enables accelerated setup and delivery of potentially life-saving blood cancer clinical trials to run, giving patients from a UK catchment area of over 20 million people access to potentially life-saving treatments not currently available through standard care.

Every 14 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a form of blood cancer.

Around 12,000 people a year die from blood cancers in Britain, equivalent numbers to those who die from breast cancer. The prospect of survival for many adults with blood cancers is still less than 50%.

There is an urgent need for leukaemia patients to access new, potentially lifesaving drugs so that they can share in the remarkable progress that is being made in so many other cancers.
