The Magic Tooth
At the beginning of last academic year, we started off with a big bunch of children’s books to learn more about storytelling. All three pupils came up with their own storylines, characters and moodboards which we presented to an energetic bunch of primary school kids at Carswell School, who were very quick and sometimes brutal in their feedback. It became clear that Felix’ story of the magic tooth was their favourite.
What followed were about 10 drafts of the story line and around 100 drafts of the text.
On the artistic side, we explored various illustration techniques. Once Anthony found his favourite for this project and we had decided on the character (Oli started off as a child, but a crocodile’s teeth are just way more fun to be wobbly), the true work began and both Anthony and Felix showed a large amount of grit and determination to get where we are today, holding this beautiful little book in our hands.
This is a story about empathy (Oli walks in the shoes of so many children who arrive in this country with little knowledge of English), the super power of speaking various languages (Oli realises how she can get her language back, but instead she chooses to speak even more languages) and connection and the desire to create a happy and diverse community.
