Baillie's Runway Run
In February 2022 I had the toughest month of my life. I was admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after having a bad reaction to the booster vaccine. Within 3 hours of my visit I was admitted to intensive care after having a CT scans which showed that I had blood clots on my spleen, heart and other organs. As time went on my body started to shut down due to an auto immune reaction. Even with the amazing care of the haematology specialists and ICU doctors, my parents were given the horrifying news that I had a 50/50 chance of living. I was given a huge amount of steroids over 3 days to try and shut down my immune reaction. The next step of the process was to go ahead with a Plasma transfer, where 80% of my blood was taken each day for 3 days and have the plasma separated and exchanged it for a donors plasma. Thankfully my body chose Fight and not Flight and took well to all treatments where I was then put into the haematology ward which is where i was first introduced to the Friends of Anchor nurse. I was constantly checked in on and offered a load of things to do to keep me occupied and brought round ice lollies and little hampers which boosted my morale while in the ward. I was then given the green light to leave hospital, however I had to be on blood thinners for what could be forever. But in late June I was given the fantastic news of the all clear and could come off my blood thinners and could go back to
living the normal 18 year old life.
The challenge it’s self is a 3.5K Run on Aberdeen Airports Runway at midnight on the 2nd of September. The run is raising money for many great local charities: We Too SC045895, Kayleigh’s Wee Stars and Friends Of Anchor. I hope to do my own challenge in the future but for now I will start with this one. This one’s for me.
So please donate if you can doesn’t have to be much everything counts.
