Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read this. For the past six months, I’ve been quietly training for the London Marathon after being kindly offered a media place for the event on the 27th April.
I initially hesitated to set up this fundraising page because I wasn’t sure I’d be able to complete the training. I’m not a natural runner by any means, but I’ve stuck to a fairly intensive training plan, and despite a few bumps along the way, I’m now feeling ready.
I’ve chosen to raise money for two charities, and though I know things are tough for many right now, if you’re able to donate, I’m sure they would be incredibly grateful.
The first is the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a charity that has been working to prevent suicide since 2005. Tragically, every day in the UK, 18 people take their own lives, and one in five of us will have suicidal thoughts in our lifetime. Unfortunately, like many, I’ve lost a close friend to suicide, and it particularly affects young men. CALM offers life-saving services, information, and advice to help anyone struggling with life’s challenges.
You can read more about the charity here: https://www.thecalmzone.net/what-we-do
The second charity is the John Schofield Trust, which works to improve social mobility in UK and Irish newsrooms through mentoring schemes for early-career and apprentice journalists, as well as undergraduate journalism students. I was fortunate to be a mentee with the Trust in 2013, and I experienced firsthand the benefits of the programme. This year, I have the privilege of mentoring a young journalist myself.
You can find out more about the charity here: https://johnschofieldtrust.org.uk/how-we-make-a-difference/
Any assistance you can offer would mean the world to me. If you happen to be in London on Sunday, 27th April, I know all runners would appreciate your support along the course and I'll be in Trafalgar Square at the end for drinks.
Many Thanks
Vinny
