Double marathon challenge

Double marathon challenge

Bridie Kent

I'm known for doing mad things but this is possibly the biggest of them all - I have decided to run two marathons in 7 days! Why I hear you ask - well here is the explanation:
Like the 850K other people I submitted an entry into the London Marathon public ballot but was so convinced that I would have the rejection email once again that I registered to run the Vancouver Marathon as we are visiting the city as part of our 40th Wedding Anniversary celebrations. A few weeks later and the ballot email arrived - congratulations this year - I was in! So at the age of 63, I am running in the London Marathon on the 27th April and then on the 5th May, I do the same but in Vancouver. I'm determined to prove that age is no barrier to a challenge.
As part of the challenge, I'd really like to help three charities that are close to my heart and so that's why I'm fundraising - here are the charities:
1. Prostate Cancer Research: in November 2024, my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer (stage 2 luckily) out of the blue following a charity testing event. The best £25 ever spent as it discovered a raised PSA level. He is benefitting from research undertaken in the UK and I want others to have the opportunity to do the same; research is expensive to conduct and so I want to raise some funds for this good cause.
2. The RCN Foundation: This charity helps support support and strengthen nursing, midwifery, and social care to improve the health and wellbeing of the public. They do this providing grants for hardship and education, and funding research and innovations grants. These grants are accessible to all nursing and midwifery professionals - you do not have to be a member of the RCN to receive this support.
3. Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth: This team of volunteers rely on donations to fund their valuable work finding loved ones and saving lives in the communities of Plymouth, Dartmoor and surrounding areas. Like many people, I spend a lot of time outdoors running and walking on Dartmoor and you never know when you will need the professional services of this amazing team.
I know times are hard but if you can spare a small amount of money to support these charities then it will really help.
