The Marathon Menace
In a world filled with hope and generosity, a group of brave walkers embark on a journey of compassion and purpose. On May 4th, they will walk a marathon to support two incredible causes: Great Ormond Street Hospital and Camp Simcha.
Great Ormond Street Hospital, a beacon of care and healing, continues to provide life-saving treatment for children battling serious illness, while bringing comfort and strength to families in need.
Camp Simcha, a place of joy and respite, gives children with serious medical conditions the chance to experience unforgettable moments of happiness, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Together, these walkers will unite their steps to raise vital funds, ensuring these forces of good continue their essential work. But the road ahead is long, and the power of your support will help turn the tide in favour of hope, courage, and healing.
May the steps be with them.

Summer Family Residential Retreat – budget £150,000 Family Retreat Each year we offer Camp Simcha families with seriously ill children a precious few days away together, full of fun and relaxation in beautiful surroundings, with all their medical needs catered for. A range of specially programmed activities are organised for both the children and the parents, from helicopter rides, private zoos and circus shows, to ‘dinner for two’ for parents who never normally get to spend any time together due to the demands of looking after their seriously ill child. Each child has a trained ‘big brother’ or ‘big sister’ volunteer taking care of them and ensuring that they have an unforgettable time while parents can relax and recharge from their challenging lives. Retreat also provides Camp Simcha parents with an amazing community of support where they can form bonds with other parents who are going through similar challenges – this experience removes feelings of isolation, and the friendships formed last long after Retreat ends. Here is a quote from one of our families: “It’s been hard to see much joy in the last year, there has been so much sadness and dark days, but the weekend was joyful at every turn and gave us such an emotional boost. Time as a family, time as a couple, time alone – it was all so needed. It lifted all our spirits”.

The proximity of the accommodation means parents can be by their child’s bedside in minutes, day or night. Patient length of stay and family accommodation. In 2022/23, the average length of stay in the hospital, in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), was eight days. However, many patients have multiple stays during the year and often change wards, moving between high dependency units or intensive care and regular wards. From April-September 2024 over 73% of the rooms were occupied. £40 helps to cover the cost of one night’s stay in our family accommodation, so parents and carers can stay close by while their child is in hospital.
