Beekeeper runs the SuperHalfs

Beekeeper runs the SuperHalfs

I have decided to run all the SuperHalfs to raise awareness for mental health and to support two mental health charities.

Why do I run, and what does that have to do with bees? 🐝

I struggle with depression and anxiety, and at times, even getting out of bed is a small win. I overthink, too, and have struggled with feelings of solitude, isolation, and loneliness for as long as I can remember.

No amount of talking therapies or antidepressants has ever seemed to help me, but a chance encounter with an ultra-marathon runner changed things!

On 23 December 2023, she dragged me to my first parkrun, and with her shouts of encouragement, I ran the full 5K distance without stopping.

Running has improved both my physical health and my mental well-being, and that’s why I’ve continued to run. Running has also become my metaphor for life; I hate running and sometimes I hate life, but in life just as in races, we are all in it together and all heading to the same finish line. 🏁

So, I’ve decided to use running to give back by, hopefully, encouraging others and by supporting two amazing charities—Mind and CALM. Please donate, and together we can end the stigma and support those that need it.

So, what about the bees?

The bee is the symbol of Manchester, and I had planned to run the adidas Manchester Marathon dressed as a beekeeper to become a successful Guinness World Records title holder.

Unfortunately, I have had to defer my first attempt at a marathon but am launching a campaign soon that will bring me back as a ‘beekeeper!’

For me, bees will always be symbolic of determination to fly despite the odds and perseverance; the bee doesn’t let the laws of aerodynamics stop it from trying and continuing to fly!

This is like me continuing to run despite not being a natural-born runner; I struggle physically and mentally every time I do!

Still, I feel incredibly lucky to be able to run, and, every time I do, I think of those that want to and can’t. Some people can’t because of injury or disability, or even things like domestic abuse. Some people may not be able to run because of mental health struggles like mine. I am running for all those people, whatever their reason, and despite how hard I find it, I’ll continue doing it for them. 🐝
