Miles for Neonatal
5716
Thursday 30th November 2023 at 12:21 and 12:24 in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh our identical twin babies Zander and Zane was born.
At 32weeks and 5 days. They arrived safely but needed some extra support due to their prematurity and was taken to the Simpsons Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The boys were doing well and did not need to stay on oxygen for long. They spent some time apart and after 10days was reunited again. Under the watchful eyes of the incredible team of nurses and doctors, the boys began to thrive and focus on eating, sleeping and growing. They spent 26days in hospital and was discharged on Christmas Day. Zander and Zane finally came home to their big brother Zachary. We had our Christmas wish that evening, having all boys home under one roof 🤍
Unfortunately 3 weeks later we were whisked back into hospital. Zane had suffered from Apnea where he suddenly stopped breathing. We later found out this can happen to some babies, especially in premature babies and unfortunately experienced further episodes of these scary moments. The unimaginable happened one night where his condition was at its worst and he completely became non responsive and I had to perform CPR on him. We were quickly rushed back to the Royal Hospital for Children & Young People where Zane was taken straight into the emergency room. Thankfully he survived and have been under further medical investigations ever since.
11months on and both boys are thriving and meeting their milestones. These preemie babies really are strong little warriors and I am so thankful and blessed they have chosen me to be their mums. The past year has been extremely tough for our little family but we are so proud and in awe of the boys resilience and strength.
To celebrate Zander and Zane’s 1st Birthday we have decided as a family( Paul, Su, Zachary, Zander, Zane and Theo) to walk 32 and a half miles between us. These miles represents the number of weeks I was able to carry the boys for. We aim to be walking at least a mile a day to raise awareness and give a little back to some wonderful charities who have provided support, care and have been a pillar for us through really difficult times. I will always be eternally grateful for what they have given to us and still doing for our family.
