Hospital at Home - Aiming High: Everest Base Camp, Here We Come

Maggie Maclean

In November 2025, NHSWI Hospital at Home members Maggie Maclean, Laura Bathgate & Peter Greenstock, will be undertaking an 11-day trek to Everest Base Camp, in Nepal.

Also joining the H@H Team, will be Doctors Shannon Cowie & Rowan Burns, both of whom were at the WIH until Aug 24.

Over the coming year in the run up to this trip, the team will be organising a number of fundraising events, aimed at raising awareness & support for our four chosen charities. These are:

WIKPA – Western Isles Kidney Patient Association
WIKPA raises funds to give grants to kidney patients and their families for contingencies which were not covered by the NHS. They also financially assisted patients that had to be taken suddenly to mainland hospital for check-ups or have their houses altered to contain peritoneal dialysis equipment. They also began raising awareness in the island community of kidney problems and the forms of treatment available.

Maggie previously had issues with her kidneys and was very grateful for the help from WIKPA when she was back and forth from Raigmore.

MS Society – Scotland
They fund world-leading research, share the latest information and campaign for everyone's rights. The MS Society is a charitable company limited by guarantee. This means their Board of Trustees are also (unpaid) company directors who take on important legal responsibilities for our organisation.

Sadly Lauras, uncle passed away last year from MS and would like to raise funds for the charity

SCAA – Scotland Charity Air Ambulance -
Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance responds, on average, to two time-critical emergency call outs every single day. They are a national charity and receive no statutory government funding, so rely 100% on donations from the public to fuel the life-saving flights across Scotland.

Shout 85258 – 24/7 digital crisis support
Shout is a free, confidential and 24/7 text messaging service for anyone in the UK who needs support. If you are struggling to cope and need to talk, our trained Shout Volunteers are here for you.

We thought this charity would be more pertinent to the younger generation and to promote knowledge of it. Mental Health in the younger generation has sadly increased over the last few years.

The trip will entail an 8-day ascending hike from Lukla airport, taking the team to 17,598 feet in altitude, which is just short of seven Clisham’s stacked one on top of the other. Coming down takes just 3 days.

At EBC, the partial pressure of oxygen is approximately half of that at sea level. We anticipate this will limit even Maggie’s ability to talk!

We appreciate all donations.

Shout is the UK's first and only free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging service for anyone who is struggling to cope. As a digital service, Shout became vital during Covid-19, as one of the few mental health services able to operate as normal at this time. We have seen the need for our support remain high through the UK's cost of living crisis.
