In February this year, we lost my Dad to Cancer. The diagnosis and the months that followed came as a huge shock to all of us and were without a doubt the most difficult days we’ve had. Our family has always been really close and losing him has been even harder than I could have ever possibly imagined.
My Dad was probably the kindest and friendliest person I’ve ever met, always going out of his way to talk to absolutely anyone about absolutely anything, and always on hand to help people out with whatever they had going on. The sheer number of messages and gestures of support we’ve had this year have only made me realise this even more. We all miss him so much.
As we’re all still navigating our way through the grieving process, I had the idea of doing something in his name in the hope of raising some money for the charities, which supported us so much in the most difficult times.
Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s Centres. Macmillan provided us with support throughout and have continued to help afterwards, what they do to help Cancer sufferers and their families is vital and I don’t know what we would’ve done without them. Also the Macmillan nurses are some of the most unbelievable people we have ever met, I can’t even begin to describe how difficult their jobs must be, and just how grateful we are to them for everything they did. Maggie’s offered us a comfortable place to go, at the Freeman Hospital, to process all of the information we were receiving at the time. All of their support is completely free and you’re just able to walk in without an appointment and speak to advisors, specialists and psychologists.
Since I’ve already ran a marathon in the past, I thought it needed to be something bigger to encourage people to dig a bit deeper into their pockets…
So I’ve decided to do 12. From the 14th December 2024 to the 5th December 2025, I’m going to be running 12 marathons in memory of my Dad. Some organised events around the country and some personally planned routes closer to home, which remind me of him.
The 14th December 2024 would’ve been my Dad’s 60th birthday, and the 5th December 2025 will be my 30th, so as you can imagine it would’ve been a big year of celebrating for our family. With this in mind, I thought I’d take on this challenge to do something positive with the time and to hopefully raise a shit load of money for these incredible charities.
