West Ham United Foundation: National Three Peaks Challenge 2024
Thank you for visiting Team West Ham United Foundation's Three Peaks Challenge fundraising page.
We use the power of football to change the lives of people living in the communities of east London and Essex. We reach 50,000 people a year with our health initiatives; mentoring, education and employment opportunities; programmes for children and youths; and opportunities on and off the pitch.
You can find out more about what we do at: https://www.whufc.com/club/community/foundation
Starting on Saturday 11th May, the team will begin their ascent up Ben Nevis, followed by Scafell Pike, before finishing at Snowdon. This is a total ascent of 3,064m and distance of over 23 miles… and they're attempting to do this in 24-hours!
We are so thrilled to have two of our incredible WHU Foundation Ambassadors and a Corporate Patron Champion in our trailblazing team!
Our Hammers Heroes are:
Marlon Harewood, Barrington Atkins & Peter Toole
Introducing Team Member, Marlon Harewood!
Marlon Harewood, a former professional footballer for the Hammers turned businessman, is dedicated to fostering positive pathways for young people, especially in football. As an instrumental Ambassador, he's committed to the WHU Foundation's mission, bringing his passion for supporting youth development to the forefront.
Taking on the Three Peaks Challenge for the Foundation, Marlon’s excited to push his limits whilst raising crucial funds for the Foundation’s +35 community initiatives.
“As a proud Ambassador of the Foundation for many years now and as part of the wider West Ham United Family, it’s brilliant to be able to get involved in such a big challenge raising money for the community, supporting those who need it most.”
He looks forward to the camaraderie of the team and the opportunity to make a tangible difference through this daunting task, having never taken on anything like this before. Marlon recognises the physical and mental demands of scaling the UK’s three biggest peaks within a 24-hour timeframe and has been documenting his training on his social media platforms: taking a regimented approach by embarking on regular five kilometre runs to ensure he’s ready to conquer the challenge on May 11th!
1 likesIntroducing Team Member, Barrington Atkins!
As a highly regarded Sports Litigation Partner at JMW Solicitors, Barrington brings a unique perspective to the WHU Foundation team. Beyond his legal expertise, and as an Ambassador for the Foundation, he’s passionate about social mobility, striving to inspire and provide students with opportunities in the business arena that they wouldn’t typically receive.
Although in the midst of extensive training, Barrington has no doubt of the size of the challenge that lies ahead. Not only do the team have to focus on completing a total ascent of 3,064m, they also have to contend with gruelling travel across three nations, as well minimal sleep.
“I’ve just reached the summit in Malvern which is the highest point in Worcestershire – about 425 metres high, which is nothing compared to the three peaks we’ve got to do in 24 hours. It’s going to be tough.”
Despite the daunting nature of the journey ahead, Barrington remains resolute in his commitment of leveraging the power of sport to drive positive social change. Furthermore, recognising his role as an Ambassador, he hopes that by taking part in this challenge he can inspire and encourage others to take on their own endeavours in support of the Foundation’s work.
0 likesIntroducing Team Member, Peter Toole!
In his professional life, Peter leads a team of client relationship directors at the WHU Foundation’s Patron Corporate Partner, Paragon. In his personal life, he finds solace in the companionship of his wife, daughter, and two well-behaved dogs, who often accompany him on outdoor adventures. Known for his love of challenges, Peter eagerly jumped at the opportunity to participate in the Three Peaks Challenge in support of the WHU Foundation, and is looking forward to taking the challenge on and helping to raise as many funds as possible.
As Peter anticipates the daunting task ahead, he looks forward to the teamwork needed to accomplish the Three Peaks within the strict 24 hours, and the sense of achievement the team will feel at the end.
“I’m sure there will be some tougher moments, sleep deprivation, sore knees and blisters but that’s the least we can do! Thinking of all the donations will keep me going.”
To prepare for the challenge, he has been diligently
training in the hills, often accompanied by his faithful dogs, Gini and Dusty.
And while he entertains the idea of enlisting his daughter's company, he
recognises prying her away from her phone may be a challenge too far…
