Mike's 2024 Winter Spine Race
I've entered the 2024 Montane Winter Spine Race, the UK's toughest endurance race. The race is a start to finish foot race along the Pennine Way, starting in Edale (Peak District) and finishing at Kirk Yetholm (Scotland). Competitors have to carry their own equipment to survive UK winter conditions both day and night along the 268 mile route. We have 7 days to complete the race which starts 08:00, Sunday 14th January 2024. I hope to finish in 5 days as the 19th January is my birthday!
My friend Alan Towart was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2017. MND is a condition which effects the brain and the nervous system. The disease gradually stops messages from the brain to the muscles, this results in muscle waste and lose of bodily function. The condition is terminal as there is no cure. The effect and speed of onset rate of the condition varies from person to person which makes the disease very unpredictable and cruel. Average life expectancy is just 2-3 years.
I have been completely inspired by both Alan's and his families attitude (Dawn and Sofia) when faced with the challenges this awful disease has presented them with. They have made the most of every opportunity and refused to roll over and give in. They're incredible people with great resilience. If I can be half as strong as Alan and his family, I'll get the job done during The Winter Spine.
Please, please support this challenge with sponsorship towards the two charities which have been supporting Alan and his family. Both Motor Neurone Disease Association and St Mary's Hospice have been brilliant so far and need your help.
It will make a big difference for people in Alan's position to help fight this cruel disease.
Many Thanks,
Mike G
