The Floating Funquest: Rowing from Source to Sea for Rivers and Oceans

This time last year, we hadn't met each other, let alone built a boat!

Today, we are preparing to launch our 22-foot expedition rowing boat that we designed and built ourselves from sheets of plywood, epoxy, determination, and a willingness to learn through trial and error.

We are Rosie and Bailey, the team behind The Floating Funquest.

Over the past year we have spent hundreds of hours designing, building, modifying, sanding, fibreglassing and refining a boat capable of carrying us on the adventure of a lifetime. We are not professional boat builders, engineers or adventurers. We are simply two curious people who wanted to take on a challenge that felt almost impossible.

The result is The Floating Funquest: a home-built expedition rowing boat designed to travel far beyond the Thames.

Before setting off on future journeys across Europe, we are beginning with a Thames Source-to-Sea expedition. Starting near the source of the River Thames and following the river all the way to the sea, we will be rowing through towns, villages, locks and waterways while sharing our story with the people we meet along the way.

This journey is about much more than rowing.

It is about adventure, curiosity, learning new skills, meeting people, and proving that extraordinary journeys can begin with ordinary people willing to try something new.

It is also an opportunity to support causes that matter deeply to us.

The Thames connects rivers, communities, wildlife and ultimately the ocean itself. Everything that enters our rivers eventually finds its way to the sea. For that reason, we have chosen to support both river and ocean conservation through this expedition.

Funds raised through this campaign will be shared equally between our chosen river and ocean charity partners, helping to protect waterways, reduce pollution, improve habitats and inspire future generations to care for the natural world.

Along the journey we will be hosting informal talks, screenings and community events from the boat itself. We hope to meet people from all walks of life, share what we have learned during the build, discuss our future plans, and raise awareness for cleaner rivers and healthier oceans.

Every donation, no matter the size, helps support these charities and demonstrates that people care about protecting the waterways that connect us all.

Thank you for following our journey and becoming part of the story.

Adventure. Curiosity. Purpose.
