Our 100km Challenge for Dogs & Dinner – Please Support Us (and Our Knees)
Six men of varying athletic ability... Richard Hughes, Josh Goodwin, Jack Harris, Charlie Denham, Ben Mason and Aaron Wagner, are attempting something that really should be left to fitter, lighter, and much more sensible people:
100 kilometres in 24 hours (Hopefully) along the South Downs Way, finishing in Eastbourne.
We’re doing it in one go.
On foot.
With a combined BMI that is outrageously high .
The Walk (AKA: The Reason Our Knees Are Already Falling apart)
Across the route we’ll be climbing 9,209ft of elevation.
To put that into terms normal humans can process:
It’s like climbing Ben Nevis twice...
Or walking up the Shard 20 times...
It’s roughly the same as stacking eight Eiffel Towers, or climbing three quarters of the height of Mount Fuji.
It’s also the equivalent of doing 184 flights of stairs, which is unfortunate because some of us get out of breath going up three.
And yes, we’re doing all this with backpacks, questionable stamina, and one team member who looks like he should be wiping your windscreen for £2, in 24 hours (Hopefully)!
Meet the Team (aka: The Six People Who Should Have Said No)
Richard Hughes – Always thinking about food, rarely thinking about the consequences.
Aaron Wagner – Point man, thanks to his nose providing elite aerodynamic advantage, he cuts through headwinds like a budget Tour de France cyclist.
Charlie Denham – So top heavy that walking downhill becomes less “hiking” and more “gravity-assisted panic.”
Jack Harris – Will have to resist every natural instinct to stop mid-walk and wash passing cars. If he brings a sponge, we’re turning back.
Josh Goodwin – Claims to be a former professional athlete, but his performance on even the smallest incline suggests his Wikipedia page may need a fact-check.
Ben Mason - Former Marine ; Firm Exterior (as expected) but softens up with Caramel Macchiato's from Starbucks. Highly intelligent but couldn't find his way out of a McDonalds Drive-Thru... despite extensive training. 100% passion and no empathy for dirty boots before a training walk - revels in distributing fines for poor appearance
Why We’re Doing This
Despite the jokes, the suffering, and the very real possibility of catastrophic chafing, we’re walking for two incredible causes:
🐾 Appledown Dog Rescue
They give stray and unwanted dogs a warm bed, proper food, medical treatment, and love until the perfect forever home comes along. They never put a dog to sleep unless absolutely necessary. Every dog gets a second chance.
🍽️ St Mark’s Meals
With 1 in 3 children in Milton Keynes living in poverty, St Mark’s Meals ensures kids have dinner so they don’t go to bed hungry.
Their motto says it all: “We can’t fix every problem, but we can sort dinner.”
How You Can Help
Every donation helps these incredible causes and gives us the motivation to keep walking when our legs have fully resigned from service.
If you can donate, thank you.
If you can share, thank you.
If you can send blister plasters, an extra thank you.
Thanks for supporting us, the dogs, and the kids, and for giving this squad of mildly overweight, poorly dressed hikers a reason to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
