Black Beauty & Freedom need your help

On 12 September 2025, Black Beauty, one of our most recent rescues, gave birth to a beautiful foal, Freedom Fighter.

Just a few days later, on 17 September, Freedom was rushed to hospital alongside her mum after developing Neonatal Isoerythrolysis, a potentially fatal condition in foals, where antibodies in the mare’s colostrum attack the foal’s red blood cells.

During her stay in hospital, Freedom received intensive, lifesaving care. This included a transfusion of three litres of blood from a healthy horse, broad-spectrum antibiotics due to lung concerns and sepsis risk, oxygen, glucose, and 24/7 care from specialist vets. It was truly touch-and-go.

Black Beauty, who came to us unhandled, has also struggled with the stress of being stabled and watching vets treat her foal. She is receiving patient support to help her adapt, but it has been a worrying time for both.

Thanks to weeks of hospital care and a huge amount of TLC, Black Beauty and Freedom are now preparing to return home. But they urgently need our help.
As autumn and winter approach, they desperately need a new field shelter to provide them with a safe, dry, and secure space to recover and thrive. This will give them vital protection from harsh weather and ensure Freedom’s continued recovery during these crucial early months.

We are also fundraising for rubber matting for all our stables and shelters. This will:
    •    Improve comfort and safety for the horses
    •    Keep conditions warmer and drier in winter
    •    Reduce bedding costs and waste
    •    Provide a cleaner, more sustainable environment

Our goal is to raise £5,000, which will cover both the cost of a new shelter for Black Beauty and Freedom and any donations remaining will go towards rubber matting across our facilities — improving the welfare of every horse in our care.

On 26 October, a group of our amazing SAFE volunteers will be taking on the Thames Path hiking trail, walking 21km to raise funds. Every step they take will help provide a safe, warm, and secure future for the horses in our care — but we need your support to reach our £5,000 target! 🐴💙
